Second only to Brazil in size, in South America, Argentina is one of the most varied countries on the continent. Buenos Aires is well known for its European atmosphere and cosmopolitan feel. The country boasts dramatic scenery including Andean mountains, a world famous waterfall and even has some Welsh communities in Patagonia
You will be amazed by how cheap Argentina is, compared to the UK, following on from financial turmoil at the beginning of this decade. All volunteers receive language training and spend time, in BA before they depart for their host community and project.
Many Projects are based in the Tucuman, Santa Fe and San Luis. Most projects are aimed at tackling the basic needs that arise from poverty, often having placements in schools. Opportunities are available in both rural and urban areas.
Programme Overview
Sample projects include:
Tucuman, ANDHES is a non-profit, non-governmental organisation that works independently from political parties and religious institutions. Its mission is to contribute to a social change based on the use of the human rights and the democratization of social relations, through the education and defence of these rights and the incidence in public policies. In order to reach its mission, ANDHES organises its work in four strategic lines: public incidence, defence of human rights.
San Luis, La Luciérnaga is a social project of Fundación La Luciérnaga, an NGO with no profit aims that sets out job alternatives and the improvement of the quality of life of the working children who are in a risky social situation as well as their family groups. Volunteers are needed to help care and give attention to the children and teach them some arts and crafts as well.
Santa Fe Province, in the north-east of the country. Teaching assistants are required to help develop basic skills and also improve English – a language whose acquisition that will help increase employment prospects.
Many of the projects are sited in beautiful areas of the country, little visited by tourists. Volunteers should be willing to integrate in to community life, attending local festivals, travelling by local bus etc. Some former learning of Spanish would be a distinct advantage, although not a requirement.
Orientation - Takes place in Buenos Aires, immediately after arrival. You will be met at the airport, by a representative of our partner office, EIL Argentina. Two weeks of one-to-one Spanish lessons, in the office of EIL, will give you a good grounding of the language and prepare you for your life in your host community. You will also get to meet and know staff members who will offer support throughout your stay.
You will start your familiarisation of Argentinean life by staying with a host family, who will help you understand how things work and give you tips about shopping, telephones, transport etc. A hotel alternative is available, without meals and at extra cost.
Accommodation The accomodation at the project is usually with a host family. This will help with integration into local life. All meals will be included during your time at the project.
