Brazil is a hugely diverse country; huge cities with shanty towns and luxury houses, rain forest, world famous carnival, football, the Amazon, the samba and more.
It is the largest country in South America and the only one with Portuguese as its official language. The people are a mix of African, Native Indian, European and Asian influences.
Brazil is a country of contrast and it has millions of people living in great poverty. Our projects are designed to alleviate poverty and improve education.
Programme Overview
Projects - There are environmental projects and social care projects. Many of the projects involve working with children who, without help, would be drawn in to the darker world of drugs and prostitution.
Florianopolis - has a project that works with up to 400 children. There are two age groups with whom they work; 1 – 6 years and 7 – 12 years. Volunteers help with feeding the younger children or with education and activities for the older children.
Natal - has a project that specialises in integrating people with special needs in to the community. The project serves 500 local people. Volunteers assist staff with cultural events, leisure activities, and organisational work.
Fernando de Noronha - has an environmental project that helps preserve the spinner dolphin habitat. Volunteers help with the work with dolphins and with educating the local people in to the importance of environmental awareness and protection. The overall project is coordinated by a Doctor of Oceanography.
Arrival and Orientation - A representative from EIL Brazil will met you and take you to your host family. You will, in the first two weeks to one month [dependent on project], receive between twenty and forty hours of Portuguese lessons, possibly with others at a similar level of language to you, and orientation to Brazilian and local life.
Accommodation - will probably be with a host family for the initial orientation and language training. Host families may be providing you with accommodation during the project, although some projects have volunteer accommodation on site. Lunches are not provided, but breakfast and evening meals are included.
