Land of smiles, land of hospitality, land of the friendly people, land of great food, land of beauty, land of nature, land of tropical beaches and islands...

Geographically, Thailand lies in the heart of Southeast Asia; its shape and geography divide the country into four natural regions: * the mountains and forests of the North; * the vast rice fields of the Central Plains; * the farmlands of the Northeast * and the tropical beaches and islands along coastline of the peninsula South.

Hospitality, culture, tradition and much more

Thailand has a rich, exotic diversity of culture and tradition. With its long history, superb tropical climate and the famous Thai cuisine and hospitality, the Kingdom has become a place for many people to visit and for most of them: to come back again.

Whatever you decide to do in Thailand, wherever you decide to go, you are assured of a friendly welcome, for the Thai people are amongst the most hospitable people you will find anywhere.

Thailand is a Kingdom, a constitutional monarchy. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej or King Rama IX, the ninth king of Chakri Dynasty, is the present king of Thailand. The King has been reigning for more than half a century and is the longest reigning Thai monarch. Visiting Thailand means visiting the land of the smiling people.

Programme Overview

Together with Thai people and other international volunteers, you will get a unique opportunity to get to know this beautiful country, people and culture. Not as a tourist, but as a member of Thai society.

During this period you will work and live closely together with Thai people, for a period of 10 weeks or 14 weeks. All programmes begin with an introduction-week and end with a holiday week. In between you participate in projects, that will last at least 4 weeks.

For example, if you choose to participate for 14 weeks, you can do three different projects of 4 weeks each. All projects are done with local NGO’s. At the end of your period of voluntary work there will be an end evaluation, before going on a holiday. In between there will be short, informal evaluations with the coordinator.

Arrival & Orientation - You will be met upon arrival at the airport in Bangkok and brought to the Greenway centre near the city of Singburi, in Central Thailand. Here you will begin a weeklong orientation program together with other volunteers. This will include:

  • Information on cultural differences and social norms
  • Introduction to the Thai language
  • Discussions and information on voluntary work projects
  • Specialist lectures on various topics of interest to volunteers, related to the projects.
  • Tours of the locality, trips in the area

The camp is the control center of Greenway's many projects. It is located in a beautiful rural area of Singburi province, not too far from Lopburi and Ayuthaya. It consists of a meeting place, a kitchen, houses with Thai style toilets and showers, and several places where you can sit and enjoy the Thai rural atmosphere.

Here you will meet the Greenway staff, the people who work in this center, and of course, other volunteers who have come to Thailand to work in the different projects. Greenway is very proud of this place, because it represents Thailand and the rural life in the countryside perfectly. It is the best location to get accustomed to the country, the climate, the culture, the people and all the other things that will become 'normal' for you after the first week in the centre.

Projects - After the introduction week all volunteers go to their host project for a period of at least 4 weeks. Most host projects are located in Central Thailand within reasonable travel distance to Greenway camp in Inburi. Typical projects will be in one the following categories:

  • Environmental
  • Youth
  • Health Care
  • Social/Welfare Service
  • Education

Expected working hours vary from 4-5 hours/day in schools through 8 hours in other projects, generally 5 days a week– Monday through Friday. Accommodation during the project phase is either with a host family or, when more appropriate, at the host project site.

Island Holiday - After completing your voluntary work, you will travel with other volunteers to the coast to discover the beautiful islands that the southern part of Thailand is famous for. Depending on the time of year, this could be in the Gulf of Thailand or the Straits of Malacca. Here you will stay in a bungalow near the beach and enjoy a week of relaxation and entertainment.
